What began as more of a backyard track and field meet has turned into a growing phenomenon.

The Redondo Nike Invitational is drawing prestigious programs and elite competitors from all across the state, making it one of the high marks on the track and field calendar.

"It's really taken off," said Redondo coach Bob Leetch, the meet director. "I'm very proud that we were able to reach this level of a meet in three years."

Athletes from 60 schools will compete, including 50 schools with full squads. Leetch estimates that about 2,200 athletes will compete in the two-day meet.

The meet begins today with a throws carnival at 2p.m. and a distance carnival that starts at 4 p.m.

It then continues Saturday with a full-fledged meet running from 9 a.m. to about 7 p.m.
